'' Hypergamy '' in India . Why minimal ?

11 Jan 2021 01:47:30

A man marrying a woman of lower caste is called Hypergamy ( anuloma ) marriage.During the ‘Vedic’ period the dimensions of hypergamy ( anuloma ) marriages was very wide . As time passed many varnas , castes and sub-castes were formed and the feeling of low and high castes emerged because of purity of blood and religion and anuloma marriage came to be known as hypergamy which includes many beliefs , traditions and regional divisions . According to Dr. Radhakrishnan , hypergamy ( anuloma ) marriages have been acceptable and the children were placed in the medium category . He believed that this trend must have started in the tenth century . Risley also thinks that this emerged at the time of racial conflicts when there were few women in the Indo-Aryan races. Whenever one race conquered the other this tradition emerge.

The children born out of hypogamy ( Pratiloma ) marriage have no caste because the woman of higher caste marries a man from a lower caste . Hindu scriptures have not only denounced this kind of marriage but opposed it vehemently .

According to Hutton , this kind of marriage was opposed because the children from such marriages lost property rights from both sides ; they had no right on property from father’s side or mother’s side . Perhaps that is the reason why the number ofnmatched alliances.

such marriages has been limited.

Following are the main consequences of such marriages have been minimal.

  1. To marry the daughter in high caste was considered prestigious , so parents of girls tried to marry their daughters at very early age for fear of losing the opportunity . Also they had to give lesser dowry if the marriage was done at an early age.
  2. The logic of hypergamy led to polygamy . The father of the groom and his family treated marriage as an occupation
  3. There was great demand of grooms from high castes and they were not many in number.
  4. Another natural consequence of hypergamy marriage was the increase in unmatched alliances .
